I would like to clarify why I call this message board "Chicago Politics at Work".
As I was born & raised in Chicago, I grew up with Richard Daley, the Mayor of Chicago (the father - not the son). He was the "boss" - one of the most powerful men in the United States. Politics in Chicago & throughout the state of Illinois was based on corruption, blackmail, bribery, threats, "deals" closed-door meetings, kickbacks - you name it - it probably happened.
People accepted this as the "modus operandi". They didn't try to fight it - & overall, because things got "done" - they went along with it. This is the basis of Illinois politics - & although it is not like it was back then - today, in order to get ahead in politics in Illinois - you still have to "play the game".
Governor Blago played this game - when he tried to interfere in the selection of a replacement for Obama. He honestly didn't understand what was the problem. This was just how things were "done".
Obama interfered when he contacted Steve Israel to not run against Gillibrand. Again, he probably didn't see anything wrong with this. He was doing what he felt was best for the Democratic party - to have a better chance of keeping the Democratic seat.
Obama comes from the Chicago political "machine". I'm not saying he is corrupt. Actually, I think he has done everything he could to keep "clean". But, in Illinois, if you want to get ahead in politics, you have to be a "party person" & "play the game".
Obama could never have become a Senator from Illinois if he didn't do what he was "told". He is the CONSUMMATE POLITICIAN.
Obama is now the LEADER OF OUR COUNTRY but his history shows that he has never been a leader - he has been a "Good Party Person".
Someone, up until now, has been dictating to him. I ask: "Who was pulling the strings during his campaign & who has been doing it since he became President?".
What is interesting is that now, Obama is starting to back off from some of the things he initially said he would do when he first came into office. Is he starting to develop backbone? Is he beginning to display leadership qualities & not be a puppet?
We'll have to wait & see.

Here we go again! Now we have Senator Roland Burris of Illinois, picked to take over Obama's senate seat by then Governor Blago, under investigation. Knowing Illinois/Chicago politics, although I always like to assume innocence until proven guilty, I have to think there is probably something to this. Legally, it probably comes down to whether or not he actually took money. Tapes discussing the possibility is not the same thing - but as he swore under oath that this did not happen - it could be considered perjury.
